MENUS

Here the fish is always fresh and from the coast - be sure to try the famous dogfish soup or the sole fish with almond sauce. But, at O Tarro, it is the meat that delights the visitor. Try the juicy lamb stew, cataplana meat (meat steamed in a copper pan) or a delicious rump of the Limousin breed. The confectionery comes from family wisdom and the recipes are still those from the owner's mother. Moreover, there are sandwiches, toasts, pizzas, salads and other vegetarian options for a lighter meal, any time of the day.

THE RESTAURANT

Right next to the river in the village of Odemira, the restaurant O Tarro, a benchmark for quality in the region, is a meeting point with the flavors of the traditional Alentejo cuisine. Open all year round, here you can see the locals and the tourists, who get together here during all seasons of the year.

The restaurant, snack bar and pastry shop, with its large surrounding terrace, opened on January 1st, 1969. After more than four decades, it is now one of the landmarks of this beautiful village, all of it surrounded by the Mira river.

TRADITIONAL ODEMIRA

After a good Alentejo style meal, Odemira deserves an exploratory visit. For starters, we suggest the wooden walkway next to the Mira river, which you can find across the street, next to the riverbanks. Then lose yourself in the steep streets of the village, ask where the mill is located and climb to the top of the hill, from where you can enjoy a wide view over the village and the hills that succeed one another in the winding and rural Alentejo. I made sure I visited Beatriz 's chocolates' factory and Helena's looms, as well as the local cheese factories always working cheerfully away.

A secular village and head of the largest municipality of Portugal, Odemira owns its name and historical relevance to its closeness to the Mira river, in the days when the river played a prominent role as a means of communication with the outside. The windmill, the four whitewashed churches that dissolve in the narrow and hilly streets, the remains of the old castle wall and the "Marcos da Barca" (Milestones of the Barge) marking the ancient crossing point of the river, bear witness to this past. These days, Odemira is characterized by its centrality in the region, with a broad trade and services offer and an important cultural role. Along the river, take the opportunity to take a walk through the riverside path, where you'll find interpretive information on the Mira river's natural goods, which, among other factors, justify the extension of the Natural Park's limits up to the village.
